In the wake of all of this goodness, I have been so amazed by the noise that surrounds it all. Saying this isn’t commenting on the perceived positive or negative noise that always surrounds the shifting of times, but rather the amount of outpouring and claiming through celebration. Again, this is not a comment on the pride or needed exhale, but rather watching in wonderment of it all.

And yet, I am realizing for myself that I am absorbing our changing world in a very different way. For me it has been one of great internal reflection. I have observed the amazing things that have been occurring and have been digesting them into my being simply because I often can’t believe that they have actually occurred. If I can swallow them into my body and consume the joy within perhaps I can better believe that they are happening as they have become a physical part of me somehow.

In light of all of this, I have decided to use only one word this week to describe the feelings or thoughts that have been occurring as I process all that has transpired. I am calling it “One Word Week” simply distilling what I need to by choosing only one word rather than a rant or exchange. In doing so I hope to quiet those around me to enter into the simplicity of joined thought while contemplating more quietly through a focused and directed emotion. I realize I always connect better with those around me and those I love when I share what is in the moment without anything extra; stripping away unnecessary noise so that the connection is better tasted due to its simplicity of flavor.

So as I move forward this week I will express in a very succinct way and look forward to the ways in which those around me respond to the dialing back and humbling of the emotions. In addition, I am also very aware that the way we respond to change will help us better to change the other necessary and long over due shifts that need to happen immediately in our country. If we celebrate to loudly or wildly, the noise drowns out  and detracts us from addressing the pressing needs of our brothers and sisters who are also fighting battles of equality and justice. We are all not free until we are all free. We are all not legal until we all are legal. We are all not equal until we all are equal. It is a quieting respect that we offer even in times of great celebration. Our graciousness in the way we celebrate will help to let others know that we will fight along side them as well.

My One Word Week began yesterday with the word love. Simple and profound. Yet universal and necessary and needed for all. Join me in this directed expression and see what happens to your feed or to your exchanges. See what happens when we create a bridge through simple words and thoughts so as to bring people together even if they do not think or feel the same. If we create a platform to welcome others to the table for discussion while seeing them through a simple idea, perhaps we can begin to bring in more love as the walls will have come down. I wonder if we can disarm the fear and anger by simplifying the exchange?

The Magic of Merging with the White Horse

I have welcomed the merging with the white horse. This is a journey of deep discovery and boundless creativity. I give way to the becoming of one leaving behind all that is unnecessary while embracing all possibilities. By weaving the tapestry of our spirits we do not lose ourselves but transform our being through the enhanced senses of one another’s hearts and dreams.

We ride to discover the endless blanket of ever expand light that reaches across unfathomable planes. The travel of eternity moves both forward and backwards in time. There is no fear direction as love moves in all dimensions.

We soar the oceans depths of spirit; immersing ourselves in the deepest states of creativity by releasing to the vacuum of the internal. We breathe water like air while swimming with the expansive wings of Pegasus. There is no fear of what is right when love knows no wrong.

This journey has no steps and yet we will travel distances only measured by the soul. There will be no quantifiable or empirical. There needs no measure when what is experienced is immeasurable. All that will be will be understood by the absorbing of all that there is.

Leaving behind the past to flow in the great mystery of the present.

So porous the heart that the light and love of the world flows through.

There is buoyancy in a body free from the burden of holding on to the weight of fear.

When there is no longer a need for value or rank, the soul touches equality as the veil of division fades away.

I know Paris is the city of light, but for me it is the city of inspiration, vitality and heart. Every time I have the opportunity to return to this magical place I feel as though I am a little kid in a candy store simply overwhelmed by its beauty and sensibility. It sings to me. It simply sings to my heart.

I know it means something different or touches everyone a little differently, but for me it truly animates my heart and enlivens my outlook on where I am in my life. Perhaps this is why I feel a strong pull to visit this place at least once a year. Perhaps this is why the opportunity for a collaboration for a study abroad program opened up to me. Whatever the reason, I am simply ecstatic that I will have the luxury of living here come spring 2016. Well at least for 7 weeks. I can’t even imagine what will happen and what inspirations will come with that long of a stay.

What I do know is that the time frame up until then will consist of really learning the language so that I will be able to communicate more clearly and confidently than I do now. It will take some work, but I know I can do it and become fluent. A little bit of focus and practice will really make all of the difference.

And on that note, off to the catacombs to see yet another side of this magnificent city. Paris, I do adore you!

ESCAPE FROM FLATNESS

Found this a very interesting read!!

educationalchemy

Today I experienced what might be defined as the highlight of my twenty year professional education career.  I met Maxine Greene; writer, philosopher and education activist extraordinaire.  She is as brilliant, warm, and engaging as anyone might imagine.  I was ushered into this personal introduction by Nick Sousanis; artist and scholar-an equally brilliant, warm and engaging individual.  By the end of a day of sharing our individual and collective visions for the future of education, I arrived at my inspiration for this week’s blog.  My title, Escape from Flatness, emerged from looking at some of Nick’s artistic work; using comic book art to create an alternative form of discourse around education issues (among other things).  Principally, Nick recognizes that art, as a form of visual communication, can articulate theories, ideas, and concepts via synchronous forms of narrative engagement.  Some of his illustrations deal with the theme of “flatness.”

Inside My Head

Here are some aspects of this posting that speak to my thoughts:

With so many technological innovations, it may be difficult for individuals that aren’t tech-savvy to keep up with the updates taking place in the digital world. This can result in frustration from traditional learners and cause them to shy away from taking more online class.

I am a traditional learner and while not afraid of technology, my understanding of the language, operations and learning curve adds to my frustration. I feel there is am missing component of leadership and direction to help those of us that are traditional be able to navigate better as well as more effectively. This makes me question the connection students who are training in physical forms will adapt.

Is He Selling This?

I find it interesting that the author, Thomas Friedman says,

“When you consider how many problems around the world are attributable to the lack of education, that is very good news”.

I have a problem that he uses the word “world” when much of the world doesn’t have access to actually get on line or the ability to participate in western practices in the ways that we do. I find his comment rather arrogant and quite frankly insensitive to so many. Does he really think online learning is going to solve the worlds problems?

Elitist?

I also find this “article” to be a sales ad for the whole thing. I find it difficult that in a time of having to teach in larger classrooms that there is an expectation that we should teach hundreds of thousands of people now.

I am bothered by the lack of personal contact missing in the education process. I have to touch my students to engage with them. What about a hybrid approach to all of this? It would break my heart to disengage with the in person interaction at some level.

I responded really well to the positive perspective and outlook on how on line learning benefits the student in being proactive and self reliant. I enjoy this as it is sometimes difficult to get students to engage in the ways in which they need to in a physical class. I wonder however how this will translate into my physical studio classes where one has to be present in their body to learn the content of dance?
