The veneer of love may be all some are able to know, yet there is so much more to understand beneath the noise of our culture. If one listens with the deepest sensitivity they will find the fullness of what love can give. Be mindful one does not fall prey to the flowery words, shallow deeds and manipulative gestures of those that are deeply wounded. It is a destructive trap leading one astray, disillusioned and the heart in eternal sadness. Trust in the light that lives within the bones which radiate the well-spring of blood flowing through the wise heart.
I believe that life revealed itself within
Perhaps I must breathe quietly and look once again
I do not know if this will be a time for change or a time for acceptance
Honestly, the appropriate thing will be revealed once more
In a silent way, I run. Quiet is the mind listening to the blood course through the highway of my veins. Breath beating freely within my lungs keeping time with my feet. Scanning my body to release tension while falling in freedom. This mysterious floating with the energy of the forest carries me more deeply into the meditation of this path.

Spending time in a state of listening allows me the luxury of getting to know what kind of a dance the dance itself wants to be. If you listen carefully, the dance will begin to whisper ever so gently and softly to you as it reveals itself through its infantile murmurs. At that moment, you have to keep listening with an intent and faith that it is a living and breathing thing that knows what it wants.
Much like people, dances know themselves, their true selves, long before those that surround us tell them what they are supposed to be. At the time you hear the whispers and they become ever more clear to you, articulate and vibrant; you know the work is standing on its on feet and ready to race its way to completion. The work creates this moment itself because it can do nothing but realize its destiny to be exactly what its internal vibration knows it must.
If I can give myself to this, humble myself in the action of creativity, I will be the fortunate bystander to magic and forces often missed by those who have tried to manufacture a dance in the image of their own ego. So it is this place of courageous vulnerability that I trust in the energies of what this creation is and allow it to be everything it so desires to be.

Our bodies speak to us. They communicate our deepest needs as well as our finest joys. Our bodies are intelligent organisms capable of incredible healing and transformation. The limitations established for this magnificent organic machine are created by the mind that is no longer capable of listening.
It is important to listen carefully to the fluctuations of the body’s voice. Every shift and alteration of functioning should be understood and evaluated so as to better understand whether or not the change is a positive one or one that should no longer be engaged in. We must train ourselves to listen again and to fully understand what is good for our systems and what might need better attention or implementation.
This is crucial in the development and training of dance. We must focus on learning through sensation rather than sensationalize external pictures or forms. If we are able to train ourselves to listen to our bodies feeling the very musculature necessary for a technical application, we are more likely to fully understand the fundamental function and integration of that function in the larger tapestry of our practice. We must allow time for the recognition and reflection necessary to hear and feel the voice of the body.
This way of working is by no means an excuse to diminish the technical proficiency of our forms, but rather a way of heightening our awareness and understanding of how to engage our bodies in a more holistic and healthy practice of training our bodies establishing new limitless boundaries that support a more conscious and soulful form. We must understand how technique works to expand the limits of what we currently think possible.
There is so much noise in our dance culture that we are not able to sense or feel the artistry within the art. We have stopped listening and have only been manufacturing the external sensationalization of jumps, tricks and turns. No one longer wishes to establish a fundamental practice to support these very virtuosic activities and therefore find them no longer able to participate in the very activity they love because they have injured themselves. This seems to be a reflection of our culture and society with wanting everything possible immediately without ever having worked for it. The student becomes a hostage to a very flimsy house of cards in which hope can no longer be a reliable foundation.
It is time for us to take time to train through listening. It is time to slow down and allow the students to hear their own bodies so that they might make informed decisions in which they become empowered as artists, creative choreographers and educated teachers. The irony in slowing down is that you speed up the consciousness for the student. If a student achieves more awareness they are able to make connections and integrate their technical and creative process allowing their practice to function like the central nervous system in our magnificent machines; making neurological and physical shifts and changes at the speed of sound, the sound of their bodies voice.
There is a deep need for silence, an aching for a calm. As the world spins ever so faster while time seems to shrink, the noise of confusion and the clouds of uncertainty, seem to drown out the light of hope. We have shackled ourselves with others dreams and become lost with their burdens. . We allow what was created for good, to strangle the very breath of our being. We live in a lie while pretending to be free.
Our navigation systems are no longer working and our compass for humanity is no longer sending us in the right direction. We have the devil whispering desires into our ears while simultaneously watching a society and culture grasp in desperation for ways of satiating shriveled souls. There is darkness inside the spirit as the light continues to dim with each passing day.
We no longer listen to the voices of light within. We have turned our hearts away from what is true for ourselves in exchange for what a society is preaching. We are no longer capable of making decisions for the self that allow our individual souls to sing. What materially drives societal goals has squelched the magical vibrations of the true nature of reality.
My heart aches as young people turn away from their dreams. I weep as I see children struggle with what their hearts tell them to be true versus what the TV demands them to believe. We are no longer at the wheel driving our destiny; we have released our fate to the faithless.
Our lives as creative energies are always in constant flux. This state of ebb and flow is what drives the tides of our spirits allowing us to listen to the whispers of the wind at one moment as well as feel the heart crashing upon the jagged rocks the next. Despite our lives seeming to be turbulent in the ways in which we live, living in the moment seems to be the best way to be able to see the goodness of all things that are in this very moment.
It is tough trying to navigate the waters of our creative life. Difficult because we are constantly developing our own voice while simultaneously coexisting with other processes that we may or may not see eye to eye with but are none the less important to our growth and maturation. We all see work in very different ways. We all understand work to have its range of depth and even, dare I say it, depth to that depth. Often times people involved in the creative process are more comfortable with the noise they are making thinking about the dance rather than the silence of letting the dance exist in its purest form allowing the deepest most honest sense of its being to exist. That is the most honest and raw form a work can take.
Even so, we must honor the creative process and current depths of being for all. Yet, while being a passenger on that boat, there is much spiritual treasure for you find within the noisy space that may be whirling about you. Mine those riches by silencing your own heart through the knowledge that you are finding new and expansive nuggets within others chaos.
Use these new found diamonds and rubies to work on what your heart wants to speak. Utilize this wealth to create a new and glorious vision letting it spring forth in the ways that speak clearly to your soul. These are the moments when you must remember that even though you are a passenger on someone else’s ship, you must be carrying your sails with you so that at any moment the creative wind calls, you are ready to hoist and being carried by the magic of its bliss.
Be ready. Be patient. Most importantly, remember that your journey is a very long arc that will carry you. Walk it. Sail it. Soar. Trust in your heart that this universe will support the wind underneath your beautiful feet. Some days you will find yourself flying. Others, breathing through the souls of your feet replenishing all that your center-line does for you. Now, all there is left is to just exhale and dive.
What is it that you call yourself? What is your name? It is in this very classification by which we perceive our reality. How we see ourselves or how we expect others to see us is what creates our own reality and perhaps our incongruent reality. If we have yet to name ourselves, as well as name ourselves properly, we might by living in the light that is both not ours nor soulfully fulfilling. It is in this place that many of us operate. We are stuck in frustration because life seems not to be fulfilling us in the ways we thought or hoped.
Have you asked your heart what it wishes to be called? Have you listened to your spirits name? If we are listening within, we will understand what needs to take place in order to be congruent with our spirit and the spirit of our reality. If we are listening to the wishes of those around us, they might be someone else’s reality with which our spirits have no desire to be a part of. Remember, your spirit is not your ego. Your spirit is the true nature of your being. Just because the ego is louder does not mean that its rhetoric is coming from within. It is only a reflection of the noise coming from the outside.
So, what is it that you call yourself? What is your name? Before you answer, take a listen.
